Europeans and AI: the intelligent living

The research “Intelligent Living: How AI is Enhancing Everyday Experiences”, promoted by Samsung, assesses Europeans’ opinion on Artificial Intelligence. The survey involved 10 countries and a sample of more than 11,000 people. The first emerging finding is that only a fraction of Europeans feel confident in using AI in everyday life. At the same time, more than half of the respondents have a desire to use it to make life easier (53%), to improve entertainment experiences and, more generally, to enhance the quality of life. However, only 15% of respondents say they know how to achieve these benefits and 38% said they do not feel included in the current debate on AI.

Understanding the Artificial Intelligence

When asked to consider the understanding of Artificial Intelligence and the ability to use it in everyday life, Poles felt the most “confident” (23%), while the British were the least prepared (11%). In Italy, the percentage stands at 14%.
While AI is becoming increasingly present in every aspect of our lives (from algorithms guiding entertainment choices to smart devices anticipating needs at home), it has also emerged that more than half of Europeans want technology to make life easier.

Artificial Intelligence for home and health

According to the survey, connectivity is a priority for Europeans. In particular, 42% of respondents would like AI to better connect the various devices in their homes. Furthermore, the same percentage (42%) said they believe AI will improve home life, while almost a quarter (24%) identified smart home management as the most desired feature in relation to AI.

33% of respondents said they were interested in products and services with AI-enabled features for household chores. Some respondents wishes AI-based solutions that provide specific support for both the cleaning of household appliances (28%) and the washing of dishes (25%).
In addition, 23% of respondents favoured AI-powered functions capable of supporting them in the creation and customisation of dishes and recipes, as well as in grocery shopping management. 21% would like support in managing energy consumption.

Another aspect concerns health. 32% would like AI support for the creation of personalised diet plans; 24% to receive personalised coaching; 34% lifestyle advice based on their health data. A similar percentage (31%) would like to use AI for sleep monitoring.

The security issue

For the diffusion of AI into everyday life, a central issue is security. 37% of respondents would like to receive timely updates that ensure safety when using AI in various devices. For 34% of interviewees the 24/7 monitoring of malware is useful. Finally, 27% identified the protection as the most important feature of AI.
